CODE OF ETHICS
- BREEDING ETHICS
- The breeder shall at all times breed for the improvement of the West
Highland White Terrier as exemplified by the AKC standard.
- The breeder shall only use for breeding adults which are of sound
temperament and are free from hereditary defects. In addition, if a dog or bitch produces
offspring with the same serious defect detrimental to the animals well-being, such
as blindness, deafness, lameness or impairment of the vital functions, from litters by
three different mating partners, the member owning that dog or bitch will refrain from
further use of the animal for breeding.
- The breeder shall breed only healthy, mature bitches (preferably
after one year of age and after their first season); allow proper spacing between litters
(it is recommended that no bitch be bred more than two times in succession); urge bitch
purchasers to spay those which for any reason will not be used for breeding; and properly
safeguard unspayed bitches from unplanned matings.
- The breeder shall breed only when he is in a position to adequately
care for the bitch and the litter and to house the puppies for at least four months or
longer, if necessary, with the plan of keeping at least one puppy for himself.
- Stud service shall be refused to any bitch that is unregistered, and
to any bitch considered to be in poor health, of unsound temperament, or exhibiting
serious hereditary faults. Nor shall a dog be used at stud that exhibits these failings.
In the event that a mating cannot be accomplished with the stud contracted, no
substitution of studs shall be made without the prior consent of the owner of the bitch.
- The breeder shall maintain a reasonable price for puppies and adults
within the current price range for the breed, based on individual quality.
- The breeder shall not sell or donate dogs or puppies to commercial
dog wholesalers or retailers, or unethical breeders, nor to any buyer where there is
reason to believe that the puppy or dog will not be properly cared for. Further, the
breeder shall not buy or sell in litter lots.
II. BUYER INFORMATION
- The seller shall inform the buyer of the characteristics of the breed
and supply written instructions on feeding and maintenance of the particular dog being
sold, and shall make available to the novice the benefit of his advice and experience.
- The seller shall inform the buyer of any known defects or
disqualification's prior to sale and any puppy known to have a defect detrimental to the
breed shall be sold only without papers or under the condition that it be spayed or
neutered and the papers withheld until such condition is met.
- The breeder shall fairly represent to the purchaser any stock offered
for sale, and will not use misleading or untruthful statements in selling or advertising.
Advertising shall be in good taste, restrained, and without derogatory remarks made or
hinted concerning the methods, animals, or reputations of other breeders.
III. HEALTH
- No puppy shall be released prior to eight weeks of age and properly
weaned, inoculated, and determined to be free of internal and external parasites. Each dog
sold shall be accompanied by a current health certificate and /or a written record of all
medical treatment within the preceding year and should include a recommendation as to when
to consult a Veterinarian for further immunization.
- If, within forty-eight (48) hours of sale, a dog is determined by a
licensed Veterinarian to be in ill health, the cause of which is clearly attributable to
the seller, the dog may, upon presentation of a written diagnosis from said Veterinarian,
be returned for refund of purchase price or for another dog of equal value, the choice of
which to be determined by the seller. In addition, if the dog should develop a major
communicable disease (i.e., distemper, leptospirosis, hepatitis) within ten (10) days from
date of sale, the seller must be notified immediately and will provide instructions for
refund or replacement as specified above. Any Veterinarians diagnosis shall be
subject to confirmation by a Veterinarian chosen by the seller. Should said Veterinarian
not concur with the diagnosis, the matter shall be presented to a third Veterinarian
mutually agreed upon by the seller and the purchaser.
IV. REGISTRATIONS, PEDIGREES, AND CONTRACTS
- The seller shall furnish the buyer of a dog with at least a
three-generation pedigree, certified to be correct to the best of his knowledge.
- Registration papers, litter registration papers, or transfer forms
are to be in the possession of the buyer within three months from the date of sale or
given upon final payment of the dog unless delayed by the registering kennel club. While
certificates are pending, registration data (whelping date, registered names and numbers
of the sire and dam, and breeders name) will be provided. No dog shall be sold until after
litter registration application is made to the registering kennel club or handled in
accordance with the registering kennel club rules. Exceptions shall be made only where
papers are to be withheld by common written consent.
- When financial or breeding agreements are made between buyer and
seller, they should be in the form of a written contract.
- To avoid misunderstandings and for the protection of both buyer and
seller, the use of sales contracts is strongly recommended to cover any guarantees or
agreements relative to the sale, with signed copies for each party involved as well as the
AKC. NOTE: Under AKC rules (Chapter 3, Section 6) all forms necessary for registration
MUST be completed and supplied unless agreed otherwise in written, signed statements.
V. CONDUCT
- All members of the West Highland White Terrier Club of Southeastern
Michigan, Inc. shall conduct themselves at all times in a manner which will reflect credit
upon themselves and upon the breed, regardless of the location or circumstances.
- Members shall bear in mind at all times that all competition of dogs
is a SPORT!!! Good sportsmanship shall be expected from both winners and losers, in and
out of the ring.
Violations of the Code of Ethics shall be considered to be
"misconduct prejudicial to the best interest of the Club or the breed" in
accordance with Article VI, Section 2, of the West Highland White Terrier Club of
Southeastern Michigan, Inc.s Constitution and By-Laws and shall be handled
accordingly. |
